"Andrew Smith has failed as Labour give up on Oxford's housing crisis" - Dr Steve Goddard

10.20.12am GMT Wed 28th Oct 2009

Dr Steve Goddard, Oxford East Lib Dems parliamentary spokesman has launched a stinging attack on Andrew Smith and the Labour party's failure to solve Oxford's crisis on affordable housing.

Steve said "Oxford has long had a real crisis in affordable housing. Average prices are 10 times the average wage and Oxford is one of the least affordable places to live in the country. The result is a massive housing waiting list of thousands, with people waiting for years to get a roof over their head. So many people in our city are trapped in cramped, unsuitable accommodation and so many local young people are being priced out of their hometown."

"Labour ignored our pleas for a strategic review of the Green Belt. For years Labour put all their eggs in the basket of Grenoble Rd, with no plan B. Andrew Smith MP himself staked everything on building these houses. We knew that would not be enough and warned them, but they wouldn't listen."

"Now after 12 and a half years of government Labour have thrown the basket away. This is an act of betrayal for so many families in desperate need of a decent roof over their heads and a legacy of failure for Andrew Smith."

Steve was reacting to news that the inspector's report into the council's core strategy will be delayed until legal challenges to the South East plan are finished, effectively sounding the deathnell for Grenoble Rd
