"Labour should change their minds on Cowley swimming facilities" Dr Steve Goddard

9.27.40am GMT Thu 14th Jan 2010

Dr Steve Goddard, Oxford East Liberal Democrats parliamentary spokesman, is fighting to save leisure facilities in Temple Cowley from Labour cuts. Temple Cowley pools remain threatened with closure thanks to the Labour administration. Speaking in the Oxford Mail earlier this week Steve said:

"Placing all its eggs in one basket, with a multi-million-pound pool in Blackbird Leys, is short-sighted in the extreme. The most sensible idea would be to combine a swimming pool and ice rink in the Temple Cowley area - and improve the Blackbird Leys Pool."

Steve has followed this up with a letter to the Oxford Times today, stating:

"It is unfortunate that years of Labour neglect have left Temple Cowley pool in a less than ideal state of repair, and I accept that bringing it up to standard will be no mean feat; but it would still seem at best rash to conclude from this that the pool, easily accessible for thousands of Oxford families, has no future. The previous Liberal Democrat administration on the City Council planned to combine an ice rink and a swimming pool in the Cowley area and a family-friendly pool in Blackbird Leys; regrettably, the current Labour administration has ditched this plan. Nonetheless, I have every hope that they can be persuaded to change their minds: Oxford has a great tradition of swimming excellence, and deserves the best and most accessible swimming provision possible."
