Dr Steve Goddard goes with Save Oxford School to present protest letter to the County Council
7.26.36am GMT Mon 1st Feb 2010
Dr Steve Goddard, Oxford East Liberal Democrats parliamentary spokesman, went with the Save Oxford School campaign to deliver a signed letter of protest to the County Council. Save Oxford School collected signatures from important people and organisations in support of its campaign against plans to change Oxford School into a City Academy.
Gordon Brown's New Labour MP in Oxford East did not attend the presentation, despite claiming to support the campaign. Smith strongly supported Academies when voting in Parliament.
Steve Goddard said,
"This protest letter is yet more evidence that local people don't want an Academy. It is outrageous that Conservative County Councillors and Labour Ministers in Westminster are forcing this on Oxford.
"The sacking of Oxford School's Board of Governors, despite their exceptional progress in turning Oxford School around, was a disgrace. The decision to press ahead with Academy plans despite the proposed sponsor dropping out defies belief.
"I call on the County Council to listen to what local people are saying. It should set up a new Board of Governors, and have a genuine, open consultation on Oxford School's future.
"Until then, I shall continue to fight tooth and nail to save Oxford School."
