"Smith should denounce Labour's University cuts" - Dr Steve Goddard

11.11.38am GMT Tue 2nd Feb 2010

University lecturer and Oxford East Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Candidate, Dr Steve Goddard, has slammed the Government for their proposed cuts to university funding, and called on Labour's Oxford East MP to challenge his own Government.

Steve said "This Labour Government have let down students and universities time and again. Their decisions to introduce top-up fees despite promising not to was unforgivable and deterred people from poorer backgrounds from going to university. My Labour opponent was one of those MPs who promised no fees, then after the election voted to introduce them."

"Now Labour are seeking to cut funding which will potentially mean fewer places for students, and less research. Labour clearly do not understand how important education is, both to individuals and the economy. It is vital that we invest in our future and provide young people with the opportunity to learn new skills."

"With two Universities in the Oxford East constituency, serving thousands of students and providing many jobs, our MP must be someone who stands up against these cuts. Our current Labour MP's silence is deafening."

" The Liberal Democrats are the only party to support scrapping tuition fees and we will fight these cuts from this failed Labour Government."
